January 1, Trump holds rally in Iowa as poll shows strong support
Former President Trump held a rally in Iowa over the weekend, shortly after a poll indicated strong support in the state.
Trump has not officially announced a second bid for the White House, though it seems increasingly likely.
Last week, the Des Moines Register released a poll showing that 53 percent of Iowa voters view Trump favorably. Additionally, the poll showed a 91 percent favorability rating for Trump among Republicans, and 99 percent of Democrats find him unfavorable. The results showed a split among Independents, with 48 percent favorable and 49 percent unfavorable.
Democrats are sounding the alarm over the possibility of another Trump run.
“He is mulling again a return to what he sees more as a crown than the presidency in 2024,” said Fiona Hill, a former staffer of the Trump administration.
“I feel like we’re at a really critical and very dangerous inflection point in our society, and if Trump – this is not on an ideological basis, this is just purely on an observational basis, based on the larger international historical context – if he makes a successful return to the presidency in 2024, democracy’s done,” Hill said. “Because it will be on the back of a lie. A fiction.”
