January 1, 6-Year-Old in Custody After Shooting Teacher

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY…
1964: First government report by U.S. Surgeon General Luther Terry warning that smoking may be hazardous.
A 6-year-old student was taken into custody after he intentionally shot and seriously wounded a first-grade teacher at his school in Virginia on Friday, police said.
“This was not an accidental shooting,” Newport News police Chief Steve Drew said.
“The altercation was between a 6-year-old, the student, who did have the firearm, and the teacher, and then a round was fired,” he said.
The teacher, Abby Zwerner, 25, is said to be in serious but stable condition after sustaining a gunshot wound at about 2 p.m. on Friday at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia.
Zwerner reportedly told her other students to run as she lay bleeding on the classroom floor.
Authorities haven’t yet confirmed what caused the altercation or how the boy came into possession of the handgun.
Brittaney Gregory, whose son was in the class when the incident occurred, told The Washington Post that the teacher was about to confiscate the gun when the child pulled the trigger.
Gregory told the outlet that the first-grade class was in a small reading group when one of the students pulled a handgun from his backpack and pointed it at the teacher.
“She was going to confiscate it, and that’s when he shot,” she told WaPo.
The teacher told the students to run, and they raced to another teacher’s classroom, where they stayed in lockdown, the outlet reported.
The police chief said the 6-year-old boy’s identity will not be made public because of his age.
Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones called the shooting “a red flag for the country.”
“I do think that after this event, there is going to be a nationwide discussion on how these sorts of things can be prevented,” he told the Associated Press.
This is the third instance of gun violence to occur on school property in the district within the last 17 months. In September 2021, a 16-year-old opened fire in a crowded hallway during lunchtime, injuring two 17-year-old students. In December, an 18-year-old fatally shot a 17-year-old student after a basketball game.

This is bullcrap. This is caused by parents that preach hate at home. I will bet money these are racist woke haters
Just a sign of the times, the evil that is everywhere. Who knows what that child is hearing at home from his parents. Guns should be locked away from children and parents need to watch what they say.
Guns don’t need to be locked away if everyone is taught the value of human life, respect for authority and any weaponry is only to be handled for legal purposes by authorized people.
The lack of morality leads to murder by any means, take away the guns and they will kill with something else.
The parents should be held accountable and face charges asap. The child should not have known where the gun was located and it should have been locked away unloaded.
Totally agree, the parents are responsible for what a child brings to school. What kind of parent allows a 6 year old to have a loaded gun? It says a great deal about them.
Where are the parents? They are just as guilty. Take them into custody!
This is caused by parents that preach always being offended by those that have a different opinion. Parents that fail to teach respect and honor and dignity and responsibility for your actions and the value of human life are to blame for this sick generation that are being today.
Never get the true story, surely by now they should have figured out where he got the gun
journalism leaves a lot of questions. but I remember seeing on Tv a cop confronting a family (I cannot remember why) and they had two very young boys probably close in age to this one. They were physically attacking the police hitting, kicking, spitting on him etc. the parents were delightfully watching. So these boys are two you might not want to meet on the street in the short future.
The news on this “case”, is totally incomplete. This Delinquent knew how to aim, @ shoot! He was taught this, yes, his parents, & what they talk about in this home, is basically “HATE “ so , his name is not revealed, but his whole neighborhood, & others, know who this Dangerous kid & parents are! So they can’t hide! The family is “MARKED “, for life. So what do the authorities plan to do with him? He’s already a Criminal, if the teacher dies, then he’s a “MURDERER”!!!
Are teachers taught how to respond to a child with a gun? If not, they should be.
Sad to say this is a sign of our times. The parents responsibility is to teach their children how AND why they should respect human life. But, in today’s society, I do understand how difficult that must be because of the disgusting things we see on TV, and the trash that is considered music. Along with all this, then we witness everyday the corruption, hate, evil, and lies that comes from Washington, DC.! Our children are under attack today from every direction. What a very sad society WE have created for our children!!
