January 1, American left behind in Kabul speaks: ‘It is heartbreaking’

An American abandoned in Kabul after US troops completed their withdrawal from Afghanistan spoke on her feelings of fear and frustration. The woman, who identified herself as Sara, had worked as an interpreter in the country for 14 years.

“I just found out that they left and I was just silent for a little while,” Sara told CNN. “It is heartbreaking. I just don’t even know what to say to you.”

Sara said she’s currently in a house with 37 people — including a mother of disabled children — who weren’t yet aware the last evacuation flight had departed.

Officials estimated that the number of Americans left behind in Afghanistan is in the “very low hundreds.” President Biden said that they will continue to work to get them out, once the Taliban confirms that people will be able to leave.

“I don’t know anymore, what to believe anymore. I don’t believe in anybody anymore because they’ve been fooling me for the past 10 days,” Sara said. “I never felt like this. I went through so many different missions with military, so many different missions and different provinces. I never had that heartbeat like I have it today, this morning, when they told me that America left. They left us to whom? To those people who have always wanted to kill us?”
