January 1, Congressman Shuts Down MSNBC Host in Tense Interview

Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) shut down an MSNBC host who suggested that some of his GOP colleagues voted for him to be House speaker just because he’s Black.

During the recent rounds of voting for House speaker, Donalds earned 20 votes from some of his Republican colleagues who didn’t support Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). The two-term congressman would’ve been the first Black House speaker.

But Democrats have since diminished Donalds’ qualifications. Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) called Donalds a “prop” who aligns with white supremacy.

MSNBC host Joy Reid echoed Bush’s sentiments during an interview with Donalds, wherein she repeatedly interrupted the congressman and suggested that Republicans only supported him to “make a diversity statement.”

“Do you not believe that the idea was to make a diversity statement by nominating you?” Reid asked.

Donalds quickly shut down the notion.

“That was not the idea, because I was in the room when the decision was made by people who chose to nominate me,” he said.

“The reality is that a lot of members actually do believe in my ability to lead. They do,” Donalds continued.

“Am I to be despised for my youth because I served one term when members know I have the ability to engage other members? Listen, we were at an impasse in our speakership elections. We got that done. Kevin McCarthy is now speaker of the House. At the same time, I was working with members on both sides of our conference to make sure that we can get the job done, and we did. That’s the only thing that matters.”
