January 1, DC Mayor Again Begs National Guard to Help with Migrant Crisis

Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser has renewed her request for the National Guard to help the city deal with an influx of migrants.
The Pentagon denied Bowser’s initial request, but she penned a formal letter to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin renewing her call for help.
Bowser asked Austin “to deploy the DC National Guard (DCNG) to help prevent a prolonged humanitarian crisis in our nation’s capital resulting from the daily arrival of migrants in need of assistance.”
“We need help from our federal partners as we seek to stabilize and manage our operating environment in this critical moment,” Bowser wrote.
The mayor also requested that migrants receive the same privileges and assistance as war refugees.
“We, likewise, encourage the federal government, as I have expressed to White House officials, to help asylum seekers in ways similar to systems set up for Afghan and Ukrainian refugees,” she wrote.
