January 1, Democrats Sound Alarm Over Iran Deal
House Democrats are sounding the alarm over the Biden administration’s efforts to revive a nuclear deal with Iran.
“We understand that while the recent negotiations have not concluded, we feel that we can’t stay quiet about the unacceptable and deeply troubling turn that these talks have reportedly taken,” said Rep. Elaine Luria (D-VA), one of 18 House Democrats banding together to oppose the deal.
“We need a longer and stronger deal, not one that is shorter and weaker. It’s time to stand strong against terrorists, protect American values and our allies,” Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) said.
Former President Donald Trump pulled out of the deal in 2018. The U.K., France, Germany, Russia, and China are still attempting to salvage the arrangement.
The lawmakers cite the prospect that the U.S. could accept Iran’s demand for the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to no longer be designated as a foreign terrorist organization (FTO). Additionally, the lawmakers are concerned about Russia’s reported role in the deal.
“Are we seriously going to let a war criminal, Vladimir Putin, be the guarantor of this deal?” Gottheimer said.
