January 1, “Gun Free Zone”: Controversial Legislation Takes Effect in NYC

New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D) implemented legislation that turns Times Square into a gun-free zone, which some say violates residents’ Second Amendment rights.

In June, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down New York’s concealed carry restrictions, ruling them unconstitutional. However, Hochul still defiantly moved to crack down on gun rights.

“In response to the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down New York’s century-old concealed carry law, we took swift and thoughtful action to keep New Yorkers safe,” Hochul said in a statement. 

“I refuse to surrender my right as Governor to protect New Yorkers from gun violence or any other form of harm. In New York State, we will continue leading the way forward and implementing common sense gun safety legislation,” she added.

The Concealed Carry Improvement Act (CCIA) requires New York residents applying for permits to provide all social media accounts from the past three years.

The CCIA also designates dozens of areas in the state as “gun-free zones,” including churches, restaurants serving alcohol, public transportation, theaters, and public sidewalks.

Second Amendment activists are not happy with the new legislation.

The Gun Owners of America is suing New York state over the CCIA, arguing that the legislation “infringes upon the rights of its citizens.”
