January 1, House panel seeks documents from agencies on Jan. 6 Capitol riot, indicating massive investigation

The House Select Committee launching a probe into the Jan. 6 Capitol riot ordered several government agencies to hand over a massive trove of documents, signaling its intention to undertake an extensive investigation.

The committee revealed in a statement on Wednesday that it sent demands to the National Archives and Records Administration, the departments of Defense, Homeland Security, Interior, Justice, the FBI, National Counterterrorism Center, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

“Our Constitution provides for a peaceful transfer of power, and this investigation seeks to evaluate threats to that process, identify lessons learned and recommend laws, policies, procedures, rules, or regulations necessary to protect our republic in the future,” committee chairman Bennie G. Thompson (D-Miss.) wrote in a statement.

The agencies have two weeks to turn over the requested materials.
