January 1, McCarthy rebukes Biden for ‘turning his back’ on Americans left in Afghanistan

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) rebuked President Joe Biden for neglecting his duties as thousands of Americans and allies remain in Afghanistan ahead of the Aug. 31 withdrawal deadline.

The president had addressed the nation from the White House on Tuesday, but his remarks were delayed more than four hours after being rescheduled twice.

“He made us wait a number of hours and then touted a $5 trillion liberal wish list that will increase greater inflation and transform our country in the worst way possible,” McCarthy said Wednesday. “The most embarrassing part, though, was that he refused to take questions, and he turned his back and walked away — an image that has come to define him and his presidency.”

“He turned his back on our own citizens stranded in Afghanistan, he’s turned our back on our allies and partners, he’s turned his back on his duties as commander-in-chief,” McCarthy added.

Biden confirmed that he’d be able to meet his Aug. 31 deadline, but that he asked officials to put together “contingency plans” in the event he is unsuccessful.
