January 1, Newsom Proposes Free Healthcare for Illegal Immigrants

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) proposed free healthcare for all low-income residents of his state, including individuals who are there illegally.

Newsom unveiled his California Blueprint plan, a budget proposal that costs more than $200 billion. The plan, Newsom said, addresses five of the state’s biggest challenges. The governor outlines plans, including creating a new statewide gun buyback program, housing for the homeless, and expanding the state’s health care coverage to all low-income residents, regardless of immigration status.

“Governor Newsom’s blueprint will make California the first state in the nation to offer universal access to healthcare coverage for all state residents, regardless of immigration status,” the press release reads.

“Here’s the big one: California is poised to be, if this proposal is supported, the first state in the country to achieve universal access to health coverage,” Newsom said during the conference. “So, what does that mean? It means full-scope Medi-Cal, including long-term care, [In-Home Supportive Services], and behavioral health to all low-income Californians, regardless of immigration status.”

If approved, the measure would allow undocumented migrants to obtain state-funded abortions.

The plan would be fully implemented by January 2024, Newsom said.
