January 1, ‘Trans Day of Vengeance’ Planned for This Weekend — Here’s What To Expect

Despite the mass shooting at a Christian school in Nashville, Tennessee, just days ago, activists are moving forward with their “Trans Day of Vengeance” protest this weekend in our nation’s capital.

The Trans Radical Activist Network (TRAN) organized the rally, which is to take place outside the U.S. Supreme Court on Saturday. This past Monday, 28-year-old Audrey Hale, who was transgender, opened fire inside the Covenant School, killing six people, including three nine-year-old children.

The rally had already been in the works before the tragedy, but the protest’s name has sparked criticism given the incredibly close proximity to the deadly mass shooting that occurred this week.

Twitter has removed over 5,000 tweets that contained a poster promoting the rally, citing fears that it could “incite violence.”

“We do not support tweets that incite violence irrespective of who posts them. ‘Vengeance’ does not imply peaceful protest,” said Ella Irwin, Twitter’s head of trust and safety.

The organizers, however, have pushed back, insisting that the name promotes “unity.”

“This protest is about unity, not inciting violence. TRAN does not encourage violence and it is not welcome at this event,” the organizer’s website reads.

The group issued a statement saying they rejected “any connection” between the “horrific” massacre at Covenant School and their planned protest.”

“Vengeance means fighting back with vehemence. We are fighting against false narratives, criminalization and eradication of our existence,” the statement said.

The so-called “Day of Vengeance” comes as several states are considering laws to limit access to gender-affirming medical treatment for transgender minors.

Transgender issues are deeply polarizing in the United States. A 2022 Pew Center Research poll found that 38% of Americans believe society had gone too far in accepting transgender people — while 36% said it hadn’t gone far enough.
