January 1, Trump to Hold News Conference from Mar-a-Lago on Jan. 6
Former President Donald Trump announced he would hold a news conference from Mar-a-Lago on January 6, the first anniversary of the U.S. Capitol riot that has been the source of much contention.
“Why isn’t the Unselect Committee of highly partisan political hacks investigating the CAUSE of the January 6th protest, which was the rigged Presidential Election of 2020?” Trump said in his statement announcing the news conference.
Trump went on to say the House Select Committee investigating the riot wanted to “stay as far away from” claims of a rigged 2020 presidential election as possible before asking supporters to “look at what is going on now” in several U.S. states.
“I will be having a news conference on January 6th at Mar-a-Lago to discuss all of these points, and more,” Trump said. “Until then, remember, the insurrection took place on November 3rd, it was the completely unarmed protest of the rigged election that took place on January 6th.”
The former president went on to criticize “RINOs” — an acronym for “Republican in Name Only” — likely referring to his foes within the GOP, Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger.
“In many ways a RINO is worse than a Radical Left Democrat,” Trump said, “because you don’t know where they are coming from and you have no idea how bad they really are for our Country.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also announced a “full program of events” on January 6, including a “prayerful vigil.”
The White House shared nonspecific plans to commemorate the day as well.
“January 6 was one of the darkest days in our democracy,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said. “It was a day when our nation’s capital was under attack, and I think there’s no question you’ll see us commemorate that day.”
