January 1, 52,000 TVs Sold at Walmart Recalled Over “Serious Hazards”

LG Electronics is recalling about 52,000 smart TVs that pose “serious hazards,” according to an announcement from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
TVs sold by retailers including Costco and Walmart
The CPSC issued a notice on Jan. 12, informing consumers that LG Electronics is recalling four models of its LG 86-inch smart TVs and stands due to “serious tip-over and entrapment hazards.”
About 52,000 TVs were sold via in-store and online at retailers including Walmart, Best Buy, Costco, and Amazon between March and Sept. 2022, priced between $1,100 and $1,900. International consumers are also at risk, with an additional 1,800 TVs sold in Canada and 2,900 in Mexico.
Affected models include:
- 86UQ8000AUB86UQ7070ZUD
- 86UQ7590PUD
- 86NANO75UQA
Recalled serial numbers begin with: 202RM, 203RM, 204RM, 205RM, 206RM, 207RM, or 208RM. You can find the serial number on the lower right-hand side on the back of the TV, or it will be displayed when you press the mute button three times on the LG remote that came with the TV.
A dozen have tipped over so far
The safety concern stems from using the assembled stand, which can become unstable and create “serious tip-over and entrapment hazards that can result in injuries or death to children and others,” the CPSC announcement reads. This occurs when the screws attaching the stand to the TV are not properly tightened, according to a recall notice from LG Electronics.
“This vulnerability can be exacerbated where an external force or load is applied to the TV stand, posing a tip-over hazard and a risk of injury from impact,” the notice states. “Where the TV stands are properly installed or not subjected to any excessive external force or load, there is no demonstrable stand vulnerability.”
LG Electronics has received 22 reports of unstable TV stands as of Jan. 12, including 12 incidents wherein TVs had tipped over. No injuries have been reported so far.
