January 1, ‘Absolutely Nuts’: Republican Senators Blast Infighting

GOP senators are blasting fellow party members for ongoing infighting in the wake of the $1 trillion infrastructure bill.

Some House Republicans filed a motion to remove Rep. John Katko (R-N.Y.) from his position as the top-ranking Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee.

According to The Hill, the “calls for retaliation” are coming from members of the House Freedom Caucus. Though it’s unlikely these Republicans will lose their committee assignments, it’s indicative of a larger problem with a growing rift within the party.

“That’s absolutely nuts,” Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) said. “The infrastructure bill was bipartisan. It was voted for by Mitch McConnell.”

“Republicans were smart to support it,” added Romney, who was one of the 19 Senate Republicans who voted in favor of the infrastructure bill.

Some lawmakers who voted against the bill also see an issue with retaliation.

“That’s just not a smart thing to do,” said Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.). “Retaliatory actions like that, I think, are counterproductive in the long run.”

“We have that situation over here once in a while where somebody votes for something and it’s disappointing to us but the most important vote is always the next vote, not the last vote,” Thune added.
