January 1, Alex Jones found liable for false claims about Sandy Hook shooting
A judge determined that radio host Alex Jones is liable in two lawsuits for damages stemming from his claims about the Sandy Hook school shooting in 2012, court documents confirm.
Judge Maya Guerra Gamble issued default judgments against Jones and his website Infowars for failing to comply with court orders to provide information for the lawsuits brought against him by the parents of two children killed in the shooting.
The ruling effectively means that Jones lost the case by default, but a jury will still decide the monetary amount he will owe to the plaintiffs.
“Mr. Jones was given ample opportunity to take these lawsuits seriously and obey the rule of law,” said Mark Bankston, an attorney for the parents. “He chose not to do so, and now he will face the consequences for that decision.”
A lawyer for Jones and his outlet issued a statement on the ruling.
“We are distressed by what we regard as a blatant abuse of discretion by the trial court,” the statement read.
