January 1, All migrants are gone from Texas border camp, officials say
Federal officials confirmed that no migrants remained at the Texas border camp in Del Rio, which was recently the subject of national and international attention.
The announcement marked a drastic change from last Saturday when over 15,000 migrants gathered at the Texas-Mexico border, driven by confusion over the Biden administration’s policies and misinformation on social media.
On Friday, President Joe Biden commented on the widespread outrage from images of border agents using their horses to block and move migrants forcibly, saying “people will pay.”
“There will be consequences,” Biden said. “It’s an embarrassment, but it’s beyond an embarrassment — it’s dangerous, it’s wrong, it sends the wrong message around the world and sends the wrong message at home. It’s simply not who we are.”
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said the US allowed about 12,400 to enter the country, at least temporarily, while they appear before an immigration judge to remain under asylum laws. Though, they could ultimately be denied and subject to removal.
