President Joe Biden was heavily criticized for his first public appearance since the tragic shooting at a Christian school in Nashville, in which he made lighthearted jokes instead of immediately addressing the tragedy that claimed the lives of six innocent Americans, including three children.
On Monday, a 28-year-old shooter attacked The Covenant School, killing three children and three adults before she was fatally shot by responding police officers. Hours later, when the leader of our country had a microphone in hand to address the nation, he joked that he only agreed to make a public appearance because he’d heard there would be ice cream.
“My name is Joe Biden. I’m Dr. Jill Biden’s husband. And I eat Jeni’s Ice Cream, chocolate chip. I came down because I heard there was chocolate chip ice cream,” Biden said in his first statement since the shooting. “By the way, I have a whole refrigerator full upstairs. You think I’m kidding, I’m not.”
After about two minutes of idle, lighthearted banter, Biden finally addressed the situation at hand. He denounced the shooting as “sick” and “heartbreaking,” and renewed his call for Congress to take action to “stop the gun violence” and ban assault weapons.
But critics were shocked and dismayed that the president didn’t take a more somber tone and address the senseless attack right off the bat.
“To say that he misunderstood the moment would be an understatement,” Chris Christie told Fox News.
“There’s no way to talk about something like this except to say that for all of us who are parents, what we dread every day is the news about the health and life of our children,” the former New Jersey governor added. “And so there’s no room to joke in that circumstance at all. And certainly not from the President of the United States.”
Fox & Friends host Brian Kilmeade also addressed Biden’s remarks, saying the president fumbled big time by choosing to first tell jokes about ice cream.
“Just absolutely ridiculous,” Kilmeade said. “I mean, if anyone should have the instincts at 80 years old of what to say, what not to say, it’s that.”
