ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY…
1969: Dwight D. Eisenhower, the 34th president of the United States, dies at age 78.
At least seven people are dead after an armed woman opened fire at a private Christian elementary school in Tennessee on Monday morning.
At about 10:13 a.m. on Monday, police received a report about an active shooter at the Covenant School in Nashville.
When police arrived at the scene, they heard gunshots coming from the second floor. They found a 28-year-old woman armed with two assault rifles and a handgun.
Responding officers engaged the shooter, and she was fatally shot at 10:17 a.m.
“An active shooter event has taken place at Covenant School, Covenant Presbyterian Church, on Burton Hills Dr. The shooter was engaged by MNPD and is dead. Student reunification with parents is at Woodmont Baptist Church,” the Nashville police confirmed on Twitter.
John Howser, chief communications officer for Vanderbilt University Medical Center, confirmed that three victims had succumbed to their gunshot wounds.
“[Three] pediatric patients were transported to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, all having suffered gunshot wounds. All three were pronounced dead after arrival,” Howser said in a statement.
As of Monday afternoon, police had yet to publicize the identities of the victims or the shooter. The total number of wounded victims has also not yet been confirmed.
The Covenant School teaches pre-K through 6th grade, and has approximately 200 students enrolled.
“Nashville has, sadly, today joined the communities that have experienced a school shooting,” Nashville Councilman Freddie O’Connell said in a statement. “For now, my focus is turning to supporting the impacted families and revisiting our efforts to prevent these horrifying scenarios.”
