January 1, Border Patrol Seizes $2M in Drugs in Just Four Days

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) seized nearly $2 million worth of various illicit substances at the U.S.-Mexico border within just four days.

On April 14, officers at the Brownsville Port of Entry found 14 hidden packages while inspecting a 2011 Jeep belonging to a 20-year-old U.S. citizen — totaling 31.79 pounds of alleged cocaine, worth about $245,140.

The following day, CBP officers found 10 hidden packages in a 2003 BMW driven by a 23-year-old Mexican citizen — totaling 23.01 pounds of alleged cocaine worth $177,480, the agency said.

It was a busy day for Brownsville Border Patrol agents, as they also seized 56 pounds of marijuana, worth roughly $45,000, from a vehicle after a minor crash. Two suspects had fled the car, but agents found them nearby and arrested them.

On April 17, CCBP officers found six hidden packages while inspecting a 2015 Chrysler driven by a 19-year-old U.S. citizen — totaling 14.06 pounds of alleged methamphetamine, worth $281,306.

That same day, agents inspecting vehicles at the Falfurrias checkpoint in Texas found 29 pounds of alleged cocaine, worth roughly $1 million, inside a Mazda CX-9.

Meanwhile, Border Patrol agents in Hidalgo, Texas, found an abandoned backpack containing eight pounds of marijuana worth over $6,800.

“Our officers remain alert as they use multiple enforcement tools to conduct their inspections while they carry out our CBP mission of keeping our borders secure,” Port Director Tater Ortiz for the Brownsville Port of Entry said in a statement.
