January 1, California requires COVID-19 vaccines for all students, K-12

California announced the US’s first COVID-19 vaccination mandate for children, requiring all students K-12 to receive the vaccine once it gains final approval for all age groups.

Individuals aged 16 and up are fully approved to receive the vaccine. Once government regulators provide full approval for the vaccine in the 5 to 11 and 12 to 15 age groups, the state will mandate the vaccine for students in seventh through 12th grades in public and private schools.

“Our schools already require vaccines for measles, mumps, and more. Why? Because vaccines work,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) tweeted. “This is about keeping our kids safe & healthy.”

In August, California became the first state in the US to require all teachers and staff in K-12 schools to get vaccinated or undergo weekly Covid-19 testing.
