January 1, Chick-fil-A Caught Breaking Federal Laws
A Chick-fil-A in North Carolina was slapped with a steep fine for breaking federal child labor laws, the Department of Labor said.
The Chick-fil-A franchise, Good Name 22:1 LLC of Hendersonville, North Carolina, was fined $6,450 after investigators determined that unlawfully allowed three minor employees to “operate, load or unload a trash compactor.”
Investigators also found that the franchise paid some employees with meal vouchers rather than hourly wages — which is a violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act. As a result, seven employees received $235 in back wages.
“Child labor laws ensure that when young people work, the work does not jeopardize their health, well-being or educational opportunities,” said Labor Department Wage and Hour Division District Director Richard Blaylock.
“In addition, employers are responsible to pay workers for all of the hours worked and the payment must be made in cash or legal tender.”
This wasn’t the first time that a Chick-fil-A franchise was fined for violating child labor laws.
In August, a franchise in Tampa, Florida, was fined $12,478 for allowing 17 minor employees to “work past 7 p.m. or more than 3 hours during a school day between Labor Day and June 1.”
“Employers must familiarize themselves with the working conditions that come with hiring minor employees,” said Nicolas Ratmiroff, the Labor Department wage and hours district director in Tampa.
“While gaining meaningful work experience is a good thing, it should not interfere with a child’s educational opportunities.”

remember when labor unions were started? Right after the War of Northern Aggression, yankees were enslaving young people (some their own children) in sweat shops for LONG hours. They created unions (socialism), so that they could not abuse them anymore. Look where we are today…. an oligarchy, those with the gold (corps) make the rules.

These are franchises, like many other restaurants. Christian has nothing to do with it – when you have 1000’s of franchises individual people are bound to screw up here and there. This is a manager issue not a company wide issue

Chick-fil-a needs to educate their franchisees about labor laws that were instated decades ago for humane reasons. Child labor laws are a must , and need to be enforced. I don’t see the reason Mr. Hunt needs to make this issue a political issue. It is not. All our children, be them Republican or Democratic, need to be protected against abusive employment policies.
Political or not, he pointed out the outrageous number of serious laws being broken by the administration in Washington. How come ANY news or social network would spend time reporting this trivial breaking of the law is beyond me. And, the comment, “It’s not the first time CF has broken laws…” Well, how amazing is that? ANY AND EVERY business with multiple locations will be on the wrong side of some law, at some point. Thankfully all this child labour laws crap wasnt around when i was a kid,, i worked a lot of hrs. developed a good work ethic, bought my first car and still got decent grades,, all without the help of uncle sams goon squads looking over me.
