January 1, Lawmaker Charged For Repeatedly Driving With Revoked License

Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-N.C.) has been charged with driving with a revoked license.

Cawthorn, 26, was pulled over by highway patrol on March 3. In addition to the misdemeanor, he faces two pending citations for speeding, highway patrol spokesperson Sgt. Marcus Bethea confirmed.

According to the citation, a trooper pulled Cawthorn over after noticing his 2019 Toyota truck cross over the median.

“The driver was identified as David Madison Cawthorn, 26 years old of Hendersonville, N.C.,” Bethea said. “During the course of the investigation it was determined that the driver’s license was in a state of revocation and he was subsequently charged with driving while license revoked.”

Hawthorn’s citations for speeding came from two separate counties, wherein he allegedly drove 89 mph in a 65-mph zone and 87 mph in a 70-mph zone.

Cawthorn was previously charged with driving with a revoked license before being elected to the House in 2017.

The maximum sentence for driving without a license is 20 days in jail, though a fine or probation is usually issued instead.
