January 1, Dem Lawmaker Arrested Twice in One Month
Rep. Aaron Coleman (D-KS) was arrested for a DUI while out on bond for domestic battery charges. The second arrest prompted several state politicians to call for his resignation.
“Mr. Coleman’s most recent arrest is further evidence that he is not fit to serve in the Kansas House of Representatives and that his continued presence in the Legislature is a disservice to his constituents,” Gov. Laura Kelly said in a statement.
Kansas House Minority Leader Tom Sawyer also called for his resignation.
“I want to reiterate what I have said in the past: It is clear Representative Coleman is in dire need of help,” Sawyer wrote in a statement. “For the sake of the state of Kansas, his constituents, and himself, he should resign and concentrate on getting the help he badly needs.”
“The stress of the legislature is not a healthy environment for someone in this mental state,” he added.
“He should resign so he can get the help he needs,” Rep. Stephanie Clayton (D-KS) tweeted.
The 21-year-old Democrat has been the center of controversy following his election in 2020. A legislative committee formerly reprimanded him for alleged past abuse of young women. The Kansas Department of Labor banned Coleman over alleged “disruptive, intimidating and berating behavior.”
