January 1, Democratic lawmaker arrested for domestic violence
Kansas state Rep. Aaron Coleman (D) has been arrested on a domestic battery charge.
The 21-year-old first-year lawmaker is not married, and details of the incident were not immediately available. Also unclear are the potential consequences Coleman might face in the House following his arrest.
“Given what little we know about the situation, I am concerned for everyone involved,” House Speaker Ron Ryckman said. “I know that law enforcement will thoroughly investigate and assess the situation so that we can take appropriate action.”
House Democratic Leader Tom Sawyer called for Coleman’s resignation.
“This is extremely disturbing news,” Sawyer said. “His constituents and the State of Kansas would be better served if he were to resign and get the help he badly needs. However, I want to reiterate again that the House Democratic Caucus does not condone this behavior in any way, shape, or form.”
Coleman has a history of abusive behavior. After his election last year, Coleman received a written reprimand from a House committee about his conduct. The committee investigated Coleman following accusations of abusive behavior towards young girls and women. Coleman acknowledged the behavior on social media, saying he was a troubled teenager.
Last month, the Kansas Department of Labor director banned Coleman from their offices because Coleman tried to access the main office improperly through a secured employee entry and berated a security officer.
