January 1, Four killed in Alabama floods
A slow-moving weather front soaked Alabama, leaving entire communities submerged on Thursday and killing at least four people.
The National Weather Service said up to 13 inches of rain fell in central Alabama, with the possibility of an additional five through the evening.
Floodwaters carried away vehicles, according to Marshall County Coroner Cody Nugent. Nugent said a 4-year-old girl and an 18-year-old woman died in separate incidents as a result. Rescue searchers found the bodies of a 23-year-old boyfriend and girlfriend inside of a car, according to Shelby County Coroner Lina Evans.
“Normally it’s just a trickle. It was raging,” Evans said.
