January 1, USPS Suspends Services Due To “Safety Concerns”

Since the beginning of October, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has suspended services in at least seven different states over “safety concerns.”

Just last week, the USPS announced that several more post offices in Louisiana and Tennessee were no longer open to customers. The Postal Service said “operations are temporarily suspended” at the post office in Evangeline, Louisiana.

“Due to safety concerns, retail operations have been temporarily suspended at the Evangeline Post Office,” the USPS wrote in a news release. “Until repairs can be made to the postal facility, Evangeline customers can pick up their Post Office Box mail and obtain retail services at the Jennings Post Office.”

The USPS issued another update on Oct. 31, alerting customers that operations at multiple facilities in Chattanooga, Tennessee were “temporarily suspended until further notice.”

“We apologize for any inconvenience customers may experience, but the safety of both customers and employees is our highest priority.,” the USPS wrote.

The Postal Service’s announcement came shortly after a Chattanooga Post Office employee fatally shot his supervisor after a heated argument at their workplace. The shooting took place on Oct. 30, ABC News reported.

Earlier in Oct., the USPS also announced post office closures in Mosinee, Wisconsin; Grandview, Iowa; Pemberton, Ohio; Stanley, New York; and Birmingham, Alabama.

According to the Postal Service, the Mosinee Post Office was closed following “structural damage to the lobby caused by a vehicle impact.” Building fires prompted the suspension of services in Grandview and Pemberton. Meanwhile, the USPS said the closure in Stanley was due to “unforeseen roof repairs.” The most recent closure in Birmingham was made “in an abundance of caution.” The USPS told a local news outlet that structural issues at the facility were causing a safety concern.
