January 1, GOP Congressman Resigns Following Felony Conviction

Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE) has resigned from Congress following a conviction on three felony charges stemming from a federal investigation into his campaign contributions.
“Due to the difficulties of my current circumstances, I can no longer serve you effectively,” Fortenberry said.
Nebraska Rep. Don Bacon (R) applauded Fortenberry’s decision.
“I respect Rep. Fortenberry’s tough, but right decision to resign from his position and wish him and his family the best.”
Fortenberry’s announcement comes after he faced bipartisan calls for his resignation in the wake of the guilty verdict.
“Congressman Fortenberry’s conviction represents a breach of the public trust and confidence in his ability to serve. No one is above the law,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said on Friday.
“I think when someone’s convicted, it’s time to resign,” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) told reporters on Friday.
In October, Fortenberry stepped down from his role on the House Appropriations Committee after a federal grand jury indicted him on two counts of making false statements and one count of scheming to deceive federal agencies.
