January 1, New Bill Would Allow Undocumented Immigrants to Vote in Local Elections

A state representative in Connecticut has introduced a new bill that would give undocumented immigrants the right to vote in municipal and state elections.
Democratic state Rep. Juan Candelaria proposed the bill, suggesting that one’s legal status should not limit their ability to take part in the democratic process.
Over 240,000 non-citizens currently live in Connecticut, per migrationpolicy.org.
The bill, which has been referred to the Committee on Government Administration and Elections, proposes for the “article sixth of the Constitution of the state be amended to allow undocumented immigrants who are residents of the state to be admitted as electors for purposes of voting in municipal and state elections.”
“Everybody needs a voice in the Democratic process,” Candelaria said.
“Allowing people who have been here for 20, 30 years to have a voice,” he said. “There’s going to be requirements. What I’m thinking in my mind is maybe five to ten years resident of the state, that you don’t have felonies.”
However, not every Connecticut state representative supports the proposal.
“I personally think it’s outrageous that we would even have a conversation about having a non-citizen of this country vote in our local and state elections,” said Rep. Gale Mastrofranceso, the ranking Republican on the Governor Administration and Elections Committee.
Carlos Layola, who moved to Connecticut from Chile more than 30 years ago, believes that the right to vote should be preserved for those who earn their citizenship.
“Right now, I can’t vote yet,” said Layola, who expects to gain citizenship within a year or two.
“I do believe it’s a right that needs to be earned here as a citizen,” Layola said. “It gave me the opportunity to learn a little more about our history and I felt like by the time I was ready, I had a little skin in the game to be able to, so I feel like I have a right. Make my little voice heard wherever it counts.”
