A photo of former President Donald Trump with a convicted mob boss has sparked questions from various media outlets over how the photo-op came about.
The Philadelphia Inquirer obtained and published a photo of the former president at the Trump International Golf Club West Palm Beach with Joseph “Skinny Joey” Merlino smiling and holding their thumbs up.
Merlino previously ran Philadelphia’s organized crime family. According to the Inquirer, Merlino was “a leader of a violent crew on his way up to being boss of an organized crime operation active in Philadelphia and Atlantic City.”
A federal judge sentenced Merlino to 14 years in prison on racketeering charges in 2001. He moved to Florida following his release. But in 2016, despite claiming to have retired from his life of crime, he was arrested on another racketeering indictment and underwent another trial in a New York federal court.
After a mistrial on racketeering, fraud, and illegal gambling charges, Merlino pleaded guilty to illegal gambling in 2018. He was released in 2020 following a two-year prison sentence.
When asked for comment, the Trump campaign said: “President Trump takes countless photos with people. That does not mean he knows every single person he comes in contact with.”
The campaign spokesperson declined to say whether Trump knows Merlino or was aware of his history, the outlet reported.
The Inquirer notes that the picture may “renew concerns among Trump loyalists eager to help him retake the White House next year that he still lacks the sort of protective political infrastructure that would prevent a candidate for president from taking a picture with a convicted mobster whose last stint in federal prison ended in mid-2020.”

Interesting, back in 2020 and 2021 some pro-Trump sites claimed that Merlino had overseen the making and mailing of phony ballots which were for Biden.
