January 1, City Pays George Floyd Protesters $9.25M Taxpayer Dollars
The city of Philadelphia has agreed to pay $9.25 million to hundreds of activists who sustained “physical and emotional” injuries during the chaotic protests over George Floyd’s death in the summer of 2020.
The city agreed to pay the substantial sum in order to settle a class action lawsuit brought by 343 West Philadelphia residents whose protest shut down Interstate 676 on May 31 and June 1, 2020. The plaintiffs claimed that police used tear gas, pepper spray, and rubber bullets to clear the protesters and allow traffic to resume.
Additionally, residents who participated in the 2020 protests will be provided with mental health counseling.
“The pain and trauma caused by a legacy of systemic racism and police brutality against Black and Brown Philadelphians is immeasurable,” said Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney.
“We hope this settlement will provide some healing from the harm experienced by people in their neighborhoods in West Philadelphia and during demonstrations on I-676 in 2020,” he added.
Philadelphia isn’t the only city to reach a substantial settlement with George Floyd protesters.
Just a few weeks ago, New York City reached a “$4 million to $6 million” settlement in a lawsuit brought by activists who protested in the Bronx around the same time as the protests in Philadelphia.

Case was already bought by falsely claiming Floyd’s death of knee. Officers charged after coroners report that he died from overdose of use of drugs. Prayers for everyone.
