January 1, Senate GOP blocks Dem’s Freedom to Vote Act

Senate Republicans blocked the advancement of the Freedom to Vote Act, a bill from Democrats to overhaul federal elections.

The measure failed to advance in a 49-51 vote.

“For every two steps forward, sometimes there are those who try to pull us one step back. Unfortunately, we find ourselves today in the midst of such a struggle,” Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY) said.

“Across the country, the Big Lie – the Big Lie – has spread like a cancer as many states across the nation have passed the most draconian restrictions against voting that we’ve seen in decades. If nothing is done, these laws will make it harder for millions of Americans to participate in their government,” Schumer said.

The bill would make Election Day a national holiday, set national standards for early voting and voting by mail and voter identification. Additionally, it contains new requirements for disclosing posters of online ads.

However, the Senate GOP members who voted against the bill argued that it was an overreach by the federal government.
