January 1, Sha’Carri Richarson Accuses Olympics of Racial Double Standard

U.S. sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson sees a double standard among Olympic officials after Russian skater Kamila Valieva was allowed to compete after testing positive for a banned substance.

Richardson took to Twitter, asking for “a solid answer on the difference between [Valieva’s] situation and [mine]?”

“The only difference I see is I’m a black young lady,” Richardson said.

Richardson won the 100-meter race at the U.S. Olympic trials last summer, but was denied a chance to compete at the Tokyo Olympics after testing positive for THC.

Valieva tested positive for trimetazidine, a heart drug believed to boost athletes’ endurance and blood efficiency.

While both trimetazidine and THC are on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s list of prohibited substances, only the former can potentially boost athletic performance.
