January 1, “The View” Host Forced to Retract On-Air Statement

“The View” co-host Joy Behar had to retract an on-air statement, apologizing for incorrectly saying that Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett belongs to a “hate group.”

Earlier this week, Behar said that Barrett belongs to the religious group People of Praise, which she falsely labeled a “hate group.”

“Now, here’s my question. She is, you know, a religious person. She belongs to the People of Praise group, which the Southern Poverty Law Center has labeled them a hate group, and their founder has questioned the so-called separation of church and state,” Behar said on Monday.

“They believe that sex should occur only within marriage and, of course, between a man and a woman. They’ve got very specific things that they believe,” she added.

Behar’s remarks came as Barrett faces calls to recuse herself from a Supreme Court case pertaining to LGBTQ rights. Critics have specifically cited Barrett’s affiliation with People of Praise as the reason for her to step away from the case.

But the Southern Poverty Law Center doesn’t consider People of Praise to be a “hate group.”

During Tuesday’s broadcast, Behar retracted her defamatory remarks and issued an apology.

Behar said she “got them mixed up with another group. It was inaccurate. So I don’t think that’s right that I should — I have to say, you know, sorry about that.”

Co-host Whoopi Goldberg seemed to dismiss Behar’s egregious error, saying that “it happens” and “it’s easy to do.”
