January 1, Woman Allegedly Abducts Child from Playground, Fights with Police in the Nude

An Indiana woman allegedly kidnapped an eight-year-old girl from a playground, dropped the child off with her confused husband, and ran naked down the street.
The Austin Police Department arrested Brittany Hurt, 34, on charges of kidnapping, attempted kidnapping, battery to a public safety official, criminal trespass, resisting law enforcement, public nudity and public indecency.
Officers were notified that a woman had abducted an 8-year-old girl from the Austin Elementary playground and headed north, according to an affidavit.
Hurtt’s husband, who had the child in the passenger seat of his car, flagged down the officers. He said his wife had arrived at their home with a child that wasn’t theirs. He told police that his wife had removed her clothes and was running naked down the street.
One officer took the child back to school while another went to look for Hurtt. She was found “running in the street nude carrying two white trash bags,” according to court documents.
Police said Hurtt struck the officer’s vehicle and tried to “yank the door open.”
Hurtt was eventually handcuffed and placed in the backseat, but not before allegedly kicking one officer in the chest and ignoring orders to “stop kicking and yelling,” police said.
Once inside the vehicle, Hurtt “began kicking the back windows” and “screaming,” according to court documents. She also refused to put on the clothes her husband brought for her.
Police tried to put Hurtt on a gurney so she could be transported to an emergency room for evaluation. During this process, she allegedly kicked an officer in the hand and was “making statements about how the children were being taught by the computers and all the children needed to die.”
Surveillance footage from the school showed that Hurtt climbed over the playground fence, placed a child over the fence, climbed back over it, and then the two took off running, police said.
Hurtt allegedly tried to abduct two different children. The first child said Hurtt grabbed her wrist and said, “Let’s start a family.” The girl managed to free herself from Hurtt’s grip and run away, police said.
Austin Elementary administrators told parents that they’re “reassessing playground protocols to increase security and safety for students.”
Hurtt is reportedly due back in court for a pretrial conference in February.
