January 1, Biden: Invasion Happening in ‘Next Several Days’
President Joe Biden’s “sense” is that Russia will invade Ukraine “within the next several days,” as the timeline continues to shift amid ongoing tensions between the two nations.
“Every indication that we have is that they are prepared to go into Ukraine, attack Ukraine,” Biden told reporters on Thursday. He warned that the risk is “very high,” but added there’s still a “path to diplomacy.”
Biden’s comments came after the State Department confirmed that Russia had expelled U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission Bart Gorman from the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, warning that it would take unspecified “military-technical” in response to the U.S.’s failure to address its security demands.
Meanwhile, Russia insisted “there is no ‘Russian invasion of Ukraine'” and that its proposals were “ignored.”
“U.S. officials say that Russia is lying about withdrawing its troops from near Ukraine, and that more than 7,000 troops have arrived near the border in recent days,” Axios reported.
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said: “The evidence on the ground is that Russia is moving toward an imminent invasion. This is a crucial moment.”
Russia continues to deny any intentions to invade Ukraine, announcing Thursday that more troops would be moving away from the border.
