January 1, Police Used Controversial Method to Identify Idaho Murder Suspect

Investigators have identified the suspect in the November murder of four Idaho college students using a controversial method.
Police ran DNA found at the crime scene through a public genealogy database, finding a match that led them to the suspect, Bryan Kohberger.
Authorities arrested Kohberger, 28, at his parent’s Pennsylvania home on Friday. He was charged with the first-degree murder of four University of Idaho students: Ethan Chapin, 20, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, and Xana Kernodle, 20.
The FBI tracked Kohberger across the country and followed him for four days before making the arrest, according to CNN. He will waive extradition to expedite his return to Idaho, where he faces the charges.
Kohberger’s attorney said his client was “shocked” by the charges.
Moscow Police Chief James Fry noted another piece of evidence that linked the 28-year-old to the crime: a white Hyundai Elantra, like the one found near the house around the time of the slayings.
The method of running DNA evidence through genealogy databases was also used to solve the Golden State Killer cold-case in 2018. But legal experts say that the practice has been both celebrated and criticized.
According to a recent article from the University of Chicago Law Review, lawmakers must set legal standards for using genetic data in order to protect the privacy of individuals who submit their DNA to genealogy companies.
Former NYPD Sgt. Joseph Giacalone, who previously led the department’s cold case unit, noted that another factor could possibly complicate the DNA found at a crime scene.
“You have all this blood, and there might be hair fibers, but you’re also dealing with a college house,” where there are “lots of people coming and going,” Giacalone told Insider last month. “So you probably have lots of mixtures in there with DNA.”

If he is not involved then why have killings stopped?
On these genetic sites to claim your geneology I would suspect they use your DNA which you submit. However, I read that they were taking current DNA from him to seek a match from the knife sheath. This is only as reliable as the lab is. The car is not proof unless they have the tag numbers because many models are made. Writing a paper about murder is not the same as committing it. So we shall see. PS. I listen to a lot of books on murders and the law and court trials that prevail. they are very interesting but they are all listed as FICTION>
